Star Words Episode III Steadfastness, Greatness, and Fulfillment Back in January, worshippers had an opportunity to choose a "Star Word" for the new year. The choices were made with the stars facing down, so that each person couldn't see the word ahead of time. The invitation was for each person to contemplate their Star Word during the course of the year, much as the Magi continued to follow the star as they went home by another way (see Matthew 2). During the month of August, a few church members and Pastor Jack are sharing what they have learned from meditating on their Star Words so far. This Sunday, August 18th, we will hear from another church family on "Steadfastness," "Greatness," and "Fulfillment." Two members will share special music on the piano. See you in worship this Sunday!

We will not celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper this Sunday, but we will do so on Sunday, August 11th. See you in worship this Sunday!
Heavenly music in church today. Thank you!
The folk song "This Train Is Bound for Glory" has been recorded by artists as diverse as Sister Roberta Thorpe, Louis Armstrong, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley, Mumford and Sons, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. In many versions of the song there is a long cast of characters who aren't allowed to ride on the train. But in Bruce Sprinsteen's version--"Land of Hope and Dreams"--saints and sinners ride together on this train. (from the book When In Romans: An Invitation to Linger with the Gospel According to Paul by New Testament scholar Beverly Roberts Gaventa). Which version of the song would the Apostle Paul have sung? In Romans chapter 11, the Apostle Paul seems to raise the possibility that God may indeed ultimately have mercy on us all. Join us this Sunday, July 28th, as we conclude our sermon series, "A Summer in Rome." This Sunday we welcome back our Director of Music, Kyoko Tagami Meredith, following her trip to Oxford for the Choral Institute. We will also have special music by Jordan Cowie and Jacob Cowie. See you in worship this Sunday!

"I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate." (Romans 7:15). In these verses, the Apostle Paul was not speaking of addiction per se, but his words certainly speak to all of us who struggle with addictions, whether to substances or to behaviors. In the words of the late psychiatrist and spiritual director Gerald May, "To be alive is to be addicted, and to be alive and addicted is to stand in need of grace." There's an iconic scene in the movie "Dead Poets Society," in which Mr. Keating, played by Robin Williams, invites his students to stand on top of his desk one by one in order to see things from a different perspective. What would happen in our worship if we imagined ourselves standing on top of the communion table? How would our perspective change? Join us tomorrow, Sunday, July 7th, as we figuratively place ourselves on top of the communion table and look around. Pastor Jack's sermon, based on Romans 12:1-2, is entitled, "The View from the Altar: exploring the connection between worship and service." We will also celebrate the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. See you in worship this Sunday!
